Last Wednesday, in our weekly reel “Behind the CFL”, we decided to do a tribute to the goalkeepers. After the interviews, not only with the goalies but with the players, I realized that we always have a “goalkeeper” in our lives.
After a game, you see them with some bruises on their elbows and knees, the rubber filling of the fields on their face, and you can see the courage in their eyes. When they won, there’s a sense of pride. When they lost, there’s a deep feeling of defeat.
And yet, every weekend they’re back to guard the gate.
Many tend to think the goalkeeper became a keeper just because they didn’t have the talent to be a good player. But the truth is that this person is key in a tournament, in a team, even a pickup game.
If there’s a player that makes a difference on the pitch, it’s the goalkeeper.
NOBODY BACKS THE KEEPER
It requires a lot of courage to be a goalie: to be hit so many times by the ball, to go against the strikers on the floor, to fall and stand up every time. You feel so close every goal against, and when your team celebrates, they do it on the other side of the pitch.
When a keeper makes a mistake, the consequences are pretty tough. It’s usually a goal against. And it’s easy to just turn back and call on them. But when a player misses a ball, it could be just a throw-in, or anyone can come up and back you up. For the keeper, even a pass from their own team has high stakes.
For everyone else a mistake is a throw-in. For the keeper, it might be a goal. This builds character.
The goalkeeper in our life is this key person that sometimes we undervalue, and then, when it’s missing, we really understand who it is.
We all have this kind of person in our life. Might not be the most charming in sales or the most brilliant in marketing, but is the one that always has your back, that can send you that report and that will spot mistakes. Relentlessly will be there to help you out.
You notice them the most when they’re missing. And it makes you understand what true value means.
